Interpretation

The image represents the state of the ‘academy’ today. The individual on the left is the seeker of wisdom (student, philosopher), who walks to the doors of truth and is greeted by the admissions counselor (the academy, tuition). Before the doors of truth (veritas) stand two faceless guardians (anonymous reviewers, paywalls). The way is barred. There is no pathway to truth. To the right stands the sophist (skeptic, teacher) who leads students to ‘safety’, away from truth.
